Almost Live

August 28, 2008

My love for this show almost certainly has to do with being a certain place at a certain time (Washington State, early nineties), but I think it shows well why specific humor is often the best. It is also of general interest, being the birth-place of the much-loved Bill Nye: The Science Guy.

As such, I present: the best free-access, unrepentantly locally focused comedy show of ALL TIME*. The best of Seattle’s Almost Live.

* One might ask oneself: how many free-access, unrepentantly locally focused comedy shows has Nate actually watched? The answer is: none of your business!

These are great. I loved that show. I’d have to add “The Ballard Files” to the list of good ones: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyF0-syviGo

Oh, my… I finally found my favorite!

Hitman Hotdogs

The Ballard Files is definitely a good one. I didn’t know you remembered the show, Mary! I’m working on assembling a playlist of all the AL sketches I can find… I’ll post a link when I’m done.

Holy crazy connections, Batman: Joel McHale, a former UW football player was a member of the Almost Live cast, and since became (among other things), the banker in Spider-man 2. One of the weird faces that always tugged at my memory has finally been placed.

Ahhhh Ballard - and lutfisk, and lefse. Ya, sure, ya betcha. And Ballard Bitter. But how can it be the same when it isn’t brewed in Ballard any more?

But there is the good Scandanavian Heritage Museum. And the restaurants dowm by the docks with great seafood. It’s a good thing.

But I didn’t know Bill Nye was a local there. But how can he keep a straight face doing all that good work????
