M's Mix

Mirabai's new mix, which you should all have been informed of by this feed, is something to write home about. Just the right combination of songs that impress upon one the eclectic tastes of the mixer, songs of delightful novelty, and songs that are simply beautiful. My own current mix manages to turn a bunch of my favorite songs into a jarring and uncomfortable whole. Time to begin a new one.

D’oh. I changed some server settings last night and thought I’d managed to keep them from affecting anything, but apparently not. Hopefully comments are working now?

Oh. It looks like that fixed another problem I’d been having.

Credit for this and the bug fix on Katherine’s BLT really goes to Hayden and Mary, for their aggressive testing and diligent bug reporting.

If by aggressive testing, you mean aggressive commenting, then we’ll take it.

Well, damn. Thanks! I tried to pick songs that would appeal to my brother, overall, since it was a mix for his birthday. I know he likes female singers, so I biased it towards them over my own general inclinations. (I’m mostly all about the boys, except when it comes to opera, when I’m all about the girls dressed as boys.) I was worried that it might come off a bit morbid to include three consecutive songs about death in a birthday mix, but the transition from April to May, from one year to another, and from this particular year in his life into what’s on the horizon all seemed to merit it. I haven’t heard any feedback from him yet, but I like listening to it, so hey. I’m flattered that you dig it too.

I do like it.
The one thing that keeps muxtape from being the perfect solution for me is that I really would like to be able to make and receive comments on mixes. Even if it’s just a word or two, the real motivation in music sharing comes from getting people’s feedback.
By the way, where does the handle “fafner” come from? Would you prefer to be addressed by it?
I, also, generally prefer the male voice, which is why it’s sometimes nice to be forced out of my rut.

Oh, it’s just habit by this point. Came from back in 2001 when I first heard the Giants’ march in Das Rheingold and got totally obsessed with the ridiculous lurching boom-boom of it. It’s just something my hands automatically fill in on blog comment forms these days; everyone who’s actually addressing me calls me Mirabai in person and in text.
ArtOfTheMix allows commenting, but as I said before, it also requires that you host the songs on your own server. Still, it’s a nice place. Good for archival purposes.

It’s also only fair to mention that two of the songs on there, Feeling Good and Blackberry Blossom, I got from Neil’s blogswap mix La Vie Boheme.

Man, I am falling down on the mixes lately. I owe Martin one, and I didn’t even try to organize a blogswap this Croquet. I have all these cool ideas which only have two or three songs per theme. Maybe I should do a bunch of mini-mixes, all put together sometime, so I can clear out my brain for more, better, longer mixes.
